Happy New Year! Please note details below regarding our upcoming MLK Assembly and a reminder to discuss your service learning projects with your students. 9:30-11:30 Guest Administrator Walk Through

This was originally scheduled near the day of the power outage, so it was rescheduled.  Please know that our guest administrators are looking at Domain 2 in the Leadership Framework (my evaluation rubric).  This Domain covers school culture and climate. As an administrative team, we are focusing on this area and are giving each other  feedback on our work as building principals in this area. There may be 1 or 2 guests in your room during this time.  If you are testing, or if this is not a good time, please let me know and I will take you off the schedule.

Early Release- District Information: Student Growth Goals and Mid Year Conferences

Thursday, January 16

8:05 Staff Meeting- Please come prepared to share the service project you will be doing with your class.  We will go over final details for the MLK Assembly as well.  Here are the notes from our Equity Team Meeting discussion regarding this service project as it relates to our book study and the MLK Holiday:

Braiding Sweetgrass- discussed the connections between the book and the upcoming MLK holiday, which often focuses on the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and acts of service that improve our community. During our MLK assembly on 1.22.25, we would like our grade level teams (or homerooms depending on teacher preference) to select one student to tell us about their service project idea. Kim had the great idea to provide a slide template for each grade level or homeroom group to fill in with the information about the project. Please label one slide with your classroom name. We all have edit access, so please only work on the slide you/your team labeled to avoid confusion.

Here are the steps that were suggested in our equity team meeting.  You can choose to take or leave our ideas:

1. Talk with students about change they would like to contribute to within our community (maybe during SEL time or homeroom time).

2.Take a walk around campus and make note of things you notice (also great for practicing walking in the halls).

3. Brainstorm with students their ideas for a service project that would make a big impact, but that doesn't take a ton of time and is realistic.  It may be that you decide on something that would be a big deal in the end, but that you could make a start on. If this conversation can be tied to an area of study you are already planning, that may help give the project focus.  For example, Mark said they will be reading Seedfolk when we return from break.  Lots of connections there!

4. Select a student from each grade or homeroom group to present the idea at our assembly on 1.22.25.

5. Do the service project and take pictures!!

LANGUAGE LINE UPDATE: HELPFUL

  1. Alternative to Language Line - Coming in January 2025 - Shoreline’s subscription to Lingolet (which is currently being used for interpretation in our school offices) includes phone interpretation similar to that provided by Language Line at a much reduced cost. Beginning in January, district staff can use Lingolet in place of Language Line. The process will be identical to Language Line, just a different phone number and account code. Details will be coming in January. Language Line will also remain available through June 2025.

  2. New Platform for Requesting In-House Interpreters - Beginning in January 2025 we will be utilizing a new scheduling platform for making interpretation requests with our In-House Interpreters called Propio. Propio is a scheduling system to create and manage interpretation requests at each school. Casey Baldner, Language Access Coordinator, will be reaching out to staff who schedule interpreters to provide zoom training opportunities on the Propio Scheduling Platform in the coming weeks

GRADES 6-8 EMAIL UPDATE: HELPFUL

IT has enforced a limit to the number of people students can send a single email to. Currently the cap is 40. If students send an email to more than 40 people it will be denied. There are two primary reasons for this change - 1) Google will suspend a student’s gmail account if they send email to too many recipients in one message. This is one of their efforts to curb spam emails. 2) Students have been using long email chains to simulate unmonitored chat that has become problematic to supervise.

Unfortunately this impacts legitimate student emails sent to clubs, sports teams and other activity groups. We recommend that emails sent to large groups of students for this purpose be sent by a staff member so they will not be blocked.
