UPCOMING EVENTS: HELPFUL

Free Online Digital Learning Conference

Ditch That Textbook is a growing online community hosted by middle school teacher Matt Miller. His approach is refreshing - many of his resources are free and he collaborates with practitioners around the globe who create engaging learning environments for students. Each year he hosts a free, online virtual conference for educators by educators. If you have not yet scheduled your 6.75 hours of pay available to certificated staff this year for self-directed professional development (“282 monies”), this could be a great option. Ann and Juli have attended workshops by several of the speakers that were well worth our time. You can also receive up to 7 clock hours if you fill out the note taking slides and include the participation certificate for each session you attend.

Conference details:

  • December 12th - January 6th (registration link)

  • One new video interview released per day (speaker bios below registration form)

  • More than 70 videos will be available during the conference (removed when conference ends)

Clock Hour & Pay (if applicable) Details:

  • In ProDev, register for Course #4812

  • You will receive all the instructions for grading and attendance described in the ProDev course

  • If you haven’t used your 6.75 hours of pay, you will find that information on the 1st page of the Google Slide found in the ProDev course

Below are sketchnotes from last year’s conference (see more from Jen Giffen)

Please keep in mind that if you discover a “great new tool” during a workshop, consider student data privacy before using it in the classroom. If it is a website with no logins, you are generally fine although look for advertising. If a tool requires students to log in, students under age 13 need parent permission unless it’s a tool we’ve adopted as a district such as PearDeck, Seesaw or Google Workspace tools (Slides, Drawing, Sheets, Jamboard, Docs…). Feel free to check with the Digital Learning Team if you have questions about a newly discovered tool.

ETHNIC STUDIES APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED: ACTION

In Summer 2020, the Shoreline School Board passed the Ethnic Studies Resolution..."We affirm our belief that the integration and addition of ethnic studies into the education of Shoreline School District’s students can have a positive impact on eliminating opportunity gaps.”

To create an intentional and sustainable Ethnic Studies Program P-12, the Ethnic Studies Fellows program was created. Through a partnership of WAESN (Washington Ethnic Studies Now), Equity and Instruction, and facilitated by Dr. Tanisha Brandon-Felder, this year long intensive fellowship will focus on the pedagogy and framework of Ethnic Studies with deep explorations of:

·      Teaching for Black Lives,

·      Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Experience on the West Coast,

·      Centering Indigenous Voices.

There is an expectation to both grow your awareness and capacity in your own schools and to work with other ES Cohort members (current and past) on how to implement pedagogy in the classroom.

Ethnic Studies Fellows will meet once a month from 4:30pm-6:30pm on Zoom to earn up to 20 clock hours. You must be able to commit to the times and dates.

To apply, please complete this form.  (Note: the application deadline for the program has been extended) Fellows will now begin in January 2023
